that's really great, jem. i'm glad you'll have someone to talk to
( he knows something's up with her. that much is easy to figure out. and if she won't tell him, then at least she'll have someone to talk to. god knows they wouldn't have resources like that in roarton. )
As promised. With all necessary explanations and excuses for being from effectively a different generation. Not that this is limited to the musical achievements of the 60's. The Beatles are on here twice as a sort of tip of the hat to my time period. And heritage, I suppose.
[It's the first thing he thinks to do, the second he steps through into this world, still wearing the suit he had on before, a bag slung over his shoulder. He's standing in the city centre, and it takes him all of five seconds to take the iPhone-ish device and use it to call Kieren Walker.
When he gets the answering message, he lets out a breath he doesn't need to before speaking:] Hey, Kieren, it's Simon. They told me you were here, you and your sister. [He knows Kieren's been here a while, and, considering the nature of this place, he may have met someone else. Which, alright, so long as he's happy, but still...]
( there's a clatter on the other end because kieren's just dropped the paintbrush he was holding in surprise, and a muffled shit as he tosses it to the side so he can pay full attention to his phone.
because it's simon on the other line and kieren hadn't thought he'd be talking to him again. not after the city already sent him home. and with the way they had left their relationship off last time, there's definitely a twist of guilt in his stomach as he responds. )
[It's been about a week since they last talked, and Bucky's a little worried about Kieren, though he can't for sure say why. Their last conversation was really too important to be had by text, and he's not sure Kieren got how much Bucky meant every word he said.]
( he doesn't know what he ought to do. he just knows that -- well. that this isn't going to be easy. it turns out it's really difficult to stop yourself from feeling something. )
James?
( kieren's a little surprised to hear from him. and guilty, too. so much guilt. )
[Late on in the afternoon of the second day (night, really), there will be a knock on Kieren's door. Armed with a massive bottle of cider and not much else, is Jem. There's no text to warn him; after leaving Petre's she goes straight to the shop, picks up a discounted, slightly wa 2 litre bottle and heads straight to Kieren's.
( he's not expecting anyone to come around, and there's something about how urgent the knocking is that makes him a little nervous. kieren swings the door open and realizes it's jem with a bottle of cider in her hands.
[He thinks for a long time about what he's going to say as he walks home from his wanderings around the city. He deletes what he's written several times, finally settling on something simple as his opener.]
I'm sorry, Kieren.
[He hits enter before he can stop himself, and if his heart could still beat it'd be pounding right now. He waits a few seconds then begins to type a follow up response.]
( kieren doesn't know what he expects when he makes his way over to the apartment -- his apartment, technically. he was angry at simon for so long, so incredibly angry that he hadn't been able to think straight for the longest time. it's the protective instinct speaking, his guilt over his failure to notice jem's problems while in roarton. wanting to make up for that now, to be a better brother. to say sorry for causing her so much pain in the past. he's trying his best.
but now that he's had some time to cool off, he fires back a text right away, letting simon know he's coming back. taking his time as he walks over to sort through his thoughts, to remind himself not to fly off the handle this time.
he doesn't know if simon really took any of it back, or if he's just saying all this because he likes kieren. he wonders if they're just too different to make this work. but he cares about simon, and that's a big deal because he hadn't cared about anyone romantically since rick died.
everything just sort of feels a little tenuous right now. but he's going anyway, climbing the steps and knocking on the door of his own apartment. )
